First snow of the winter hits Dublin mountains as Yellow Alert remains in place

The first snows of winter blanketed the Dublin mountains over weekend.

It’s not too early to be dreaming of a White Christmas as the forecast for flurries remains on the radar.

A Status Yellow warning for snow-ice was in effect over the weekend with weather chiefs predicting wintry showers.

And the alert is still in place this morning as temperatures plunged to lows of -3C last night.

The alert was due to expire yesterday morning but forecasters extended it until 10am today due to the freezing conditions.

Scattered wintry showers, sleet and snow are predicted especially prevalent on higher ground.

Met Eireann warned motorists and pedestrians should also be aware there may be icy stretches on roads and footpaths with a “sharp to severe” frost gripping the country last night.

A spokesman said: “Today will start cold and frosty across the country with icy stretches.

“Further showers will affect the northwest and coastal areas of the west, carrying further east for a time in the afternoon, otherwise there will be a good deal of sunshine.”

Wrap up warm if you’re heading out as highest temperatures will only reach 3C to 5C with fresh to strong southwesterly winds.

And the mercury will plunge again after dark to lows of -3C.

Similar temperatures are expected tomorrow which is expected to be a mainly dry day with highs of 3C to 5C and night-time temperatures falling below freezing point.

By the middle of the week, with temperatures creeping back up to highs of 9C by Wednesday.
