Snow was observed atop Mt. Fuji for the first time this season on Tuesday, according to the Kofu Local Meteorological Office.
The first snow was observed 21 days earlier than last year, and 25 days earlier than an average year.
At about 5:30 a.m., an official at the Kofu meteorological office visually confirmed thin layers of snow near the summit. According to the office, temperature around the summit dropped to below zero early Monday evening, and snow apparently fell during the night.
About three to four centimeters of snow reportedly fell by Tuesday morning near the mountain lodge Goraikoukan near the summit.
"It's quite unusual to see snow deep enough for there to be clear footprints during the summer season," said an employee of the mountain lodge.
