First signing of summer does not have to be marquee one for Nottingham Forest

The long wait for Nottingham Forest to make a signing is finally over.

Sammy Ameobi has joined on a free transfer as he penned a one-year deal.

Is he a good signing? It's a difficult one because he's a 27-year-old free agent in the cold light of day. People might think it's a strange move considering Bolton got relegated and had an awful season.

On the other hand, he's got a point to prove after that and he's young enough to prove it at Forest.

It's a signing where you really have to wait and see. Initially there was a lot of scepticism, but when you take into account what was going on at Bolton last season, an open mind is needed.

If it doesn't work out, how much do Forest lose out? Not much really based on the terms of his arrival.

Fans want players who are good enough to get you in the Premier League, but we don't know how Martin sees this signing.

Is Ameobi going to be an absolutely key man or is he someone who might be more of a squad player?

You have to wait and see how it pans out. In an ideal world, you want that first signing to be a marquee man that makes people sit up and take notice, but it doesn't always work like that.

There are very few transfers being done at the moment full stop. That will probably accelerate now the international games are over in Europe.

To make big signings it does look like players will have to leave the City Ground -  and in numbers. Apostolos Vellios has gone, but the squad is still way too big.

Vellios' departure makes sense. He wasn't going to play next season and he's gone to Greece with what looks like a good deal for himself at Atromitos.

Shipping out other players on good money might be difficult, but once they go the hope is you can replace them with better players.
