First Scots coronavirus case spread through community confirmed

The first case of coronavirus in Scotland which has been transmitted through the community has been confirmed.

The Scottish Government made the announcement after it was confirmed that the number of people who have tested positive for COVID-19 has risen from 27 to 36 - an increase of nine people in one day.

In Glasgow, number of cases of coronavirus in Glasgow has risen to five from three.

Community transmission means that the person did not contract the disease through travel or direct contact, but instead through their community.

The Scottish Government has reasserted that their approach to coronavirus remains in the containment phase.

Chief Medical Officer Catherine Calderwood said: "We have identified the first case of community transmission in Scotland which is unrelated to contact or travel. This was identified through our enhanced surveillance scheme.

"It is important to emphasise that we are still in the containment phase. This case was to be expected and highlights the importance of the additional measures we have put in place to identify positive cases beyond self-identification."

A total of 2,316 tests for coronavirus have been conducted, with 36 confirmed positive for the disease and 2,280 negative.

In a speech to the Scottish Parliament yesterday, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport Jeane Freeman said there were no evidence yet of community transmission, however she said "we can expect to move relatively soon to delay when we begin to see cases transmitted in the community".

The first case of coronavirus in Glasgow was confirmed six days ago on March 5.

Lothian has the most confirmed cases of the disease, with eight diagnoses, followed by Grampian with six and Greater Glasgow and Clyde with five.

Six people in the UK have died of coronavirus in the UK so far, with a total of 382 cases across the country.
