First Scots receive ground breaking Covid-19 vaccine in Edinburgh

The largest vaccination programme ever seen in Scotland got underway on Tuesday as Nicola Sturgeon hailed the "beginning of the end" of the pandemic.

Frontline care staff were the first people to immunised against Covid-19 thanks to the long-awaited wonder drug from Pfizer.

The vaccines were issued at hospital vaccinating hubs but will eventually be given out in care homes and GP surgeries in the coming weeks to priority patients.

First in line at the Western General in Edinburgh today was staff nurse Melissa Sheppard, who got her jab at 8.30am.

Following afterwards was her colleague Andrew Mencnarowski, who on Monday had spoken with the First Minister when she visited the hospital to learn more about the vaccine roll-out.

A senior charge nurse who is a clinical lead of outpatient theatres with NHS Lothian, he will now go on to vaccinate colleagues at the hospital.

Mencnarowski said he felt "absolutely fine" after the jab and thanked other staff for their hard work during the pandemic.

He added: "It's a huge step forward in the battle against the Covid virus. I feel very proud and excited to be part of it all."

Mencnarowski added: "My department has never stopped. The workload changed but I have to say the staff have been absolutely fantastic, they stepped up to the plate.

"They put themselves out, they went the extra mile on more than one occasion.

"I can't thank the staff down in theatres in my department enough."

Workers will be relieved the vaccine is now being delivered, he said, adding: "Some staff, don't get me wrong, are a bit wary about it.

"But the majority of staff in the Western I've spoken to are keen on the vaccine and are looking forward to getting the vaccine.

"It wouldn't have been passed by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) if it wasn't safe.

"I know it seems quick but they didn't cut any corners. As far as I'm concerned, it's safe and I'm willing to take the vaccine and move on forward."

We told how frontline health workers will be given jabs at 23 sites across Scotland under the initial phase of a national programme.

Eventually, millions of people will be protected against coronavirus.

Down south Maggie Keenan made history as the first person in the world to receive the life-saving vaccination.

The 90-year-old from Coventry said it was a 'privilege' and the 'best early birthday present' as she turns 91 next week.

The FM said she 'got a bit of a lump on her throat' watching emotional footage of Maggie's long-awaited vaccination.

Scotland initially got 65,000 doses of the Pfizer BioNtech jab.

It comes as Sturgeon will today confirm the coronavirus tiers that will apply to Scotland's thirty two local authorities.

The Scottish Cabinet will sign off a plan which will be announced by the First Minister at Holyrood.

Scotland's five tier system, which ranges from zero to four, has been in place since early November.

The corornavirus pandemic first put Scotland on lockdown at the end of March.

Covid-19 has since claimed the lives of almost 4,000 people.
