First Ryanair flights depart Liverpool Airport after 12 weeks

Ryanair's first flights from Liverpool John Lennon Airport have departed after being grounded for 12 weeks.

Yesterday (June 21) saw the first plane depart to Alicante at 9.39am and arrive at 12.55pm.

Passengers travelled on a Boeing 737-8AS, which can hold around 189 people.

The second Ryanair flight from Liverpool left at 11.55am today, and is due to land in Malaga at 3.50pm.

Ryanair says all aircrafts are fitted with HEPA air filters (High Efficiency Particulate Arrestors), which remove particles in the air, down to the size of microscopic bacteria and virus clusters with an efficiency of better than 99.99%.

Interior surfaces are said to be disinfected every night with chemicals, which are effective for over 24 hours.

From June 1, Ryanair cabin crew have worn face masks and coverings and only offered a limited inflight service of pre-packaged snacks and drinks, but no cash sales.

Queuing for toilets is also prohibited on board although toilet access is made available to individual passengers upon request.

This comes as Spain's foreign minister said Britons are "freely" welcome to Spain without the need to quarantine there.

Anyone returning to the UK would still need to quarantine for 14 days under the Government plans for nearly all new arrivals in an effort to prevent new coronavirus cases arriving from abroad.
