First-round pick Mekhi Becton signs rookie deal with Jets

Mekhi Becton is officially a Jet.

New York and the 11th overall pick came to terms on his rookie deal Monday. Becton’s contract is for four years with a fifth-year option. It is worth a fully guaranteed $18.45 million, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Becton, who made it known he was in New Jersey on Monday, will likely be the Jets’ starting left tackle when they take the field Week 1. The Louisville product gives Sam Darnold a mountain of a man protecting his blindside; Becton is listed at 6-foot-7, 363 pounds. Becton has quick feet and plenty of athleticism despite his frame. He brings versatility if needed as well after playing both tackle positions at Louisville.

Now Becton will join an offensive line that has been completely remade in Joe Douglas’ image. The rookie could be one of five new starters in the trenches for New York after last year’s unit failed to offer much pass or run protection.

Becton is already a formidable run-blocker. The Jets are banking on his raw skill and size when it comes to developing him into an elite pass-blocker as well.
