First-round pick Darnell Savage signs rookie deal with Packers

Darnell Savage is fast on the field, and fast with a pen, apparently.

The Green Bay Packers’ first-round pick agreed to his rookie deal Thursday, becoming the first of the NFL’s 32 first-round picks in 2019 to complete a deal, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The Packers traded up nine spots in the first round to get Savage, who ran a 4.36-second 40-yard dash coming out of Maryland.

Last year, the Packers didn’t agree to a deal with first-round pick Jaire Alexander until May 15.

Savage’s deal is for four years and includes a fifth-year team option, as all first-round contracts do since the new CBA in 2011.

Over the Cap projected the 21st overall pick to earn a four-year, $12.5 million deal, with a signing bonus over $7 million. The NFL instituted a rookie wage scale in 2011, simplifying the process of getting draft picks signed.

The Packers begin rookie minicamp on Friday.
