First pictures of three men killed in horror M8 crash as man arrested

Three young men who died in a tragic crash on the M8 on Sunday have been named locally as David Paton, 27, Manveer Benning, 27, and Mark Downie, 31.

Emergency services raced to the M8 at junction 31 westbound, near Bishopton, around 5am on Sunday morning.

The trio sadly could not be saved and were all pronounced dead at the scene.

Four others were also taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries following the smash involving a blue Audi Q7 after the car left the road.

Greenock and the wider community is said to have been "rocked" by the tragedy as tributes poured in online for the group of pals.

One person said: "RIP boys and deepest condolences to the families. This has rocked Greenock and the wider community."

Another added: "Heart is broken thinking of all the family’s."

While one wrote: "Heart breaks for all of use family and friends. Beautiful boys. RIP."

Someone else added: "So sad, every mothers worst nightmare getting a call or visit like that in the middle of the night. May they rest in peace and lets hope the 5 injured recover well and aren't too badly affected.

"Thoughts also to the emergency crews having to deal with this tragedy. Its just horrific."

One said: "So, so sad. Thoughts are with their heartbroken families."

A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with road traffic offences following the incident.

Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision remain ongoing and officers are still urging anyone with information to get in touch.

A statement said: "Police Scotland can confirm that a 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with road traffic offences following a crash on the M8 at junction 31 westbound around 5.05am on Sunday, 19 September, 2021.

"Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 0860 of 19/09/21."
