First pictures of new-look Headingley Stadium following £44 million transformation

Leeds Rhinos fans heading to tonight's crunch match with fierce rivals Castleford Tigers are in for a treat, as the brand new North Stand will once more be crammed full of supporters.

The opening of the North Stand, complete with 3,800 seats, signals the end of an incredible overhaul of the iconic Emerald Headingley Stadium, which is now a fitting arena for world-class sport.

It follows a lengthy £44 million transformation, which saw the old North and South Stands knocked down and replaced with bigger and better terraces.

The new South Stand has been built from scratch too and can now hold up to 7,700 supporters, helping to create an intimidating atmosphere for away sides visiting Headingley.

While the Rhinos match will be the first time the new-look rugby stadium will be used, cricket fans from across the country will have the chance to experience the revamped Main Stand for the first time on Sunday.

England host Pakistan in the fifth One Day International, but all eyes will be on the imposing stand as play gets underway.

The redevelopment was vital in retaining the stadium's status as an international cricket venue - which is crucial with the Ashes and the ICC Cricket World Cup both in Leeds next year.

Speaking earlier this year, Leeds Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington told LeedsLive: "It's unique in being the home to three sports.

"It's an international stadium and the vision of completing it and restoring it to its pre-eminence as an international sporting venue will be complete by the summer of next year.

"Emerald Headingley Stadium is a huge historical asset to the city and indeed the county and of course it's the home of three sports and the England cricket team aswell.

"We're looking very much to the future."
