This is the scene of devastation left inside a flat ripped apart in a suspected gas explosion.

Photos showing the inside of the Washington home after a blast tore through the property have been shared by the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

The explosion happened in the middle of a block of flats at Collingwood Court in Sulgrave just before midday on Monday.

A light fitting in the kitchen appears to have exploded but it is not known if this is was the source of the huge blast.

Most of the outer wall of the flat was also damaged, leaving the flat's contents open to the air and rubble and glass littering the street.

The gas and electricity supply to the building has been turned off while an investigation continues.
