First pictures of £18m Centre Parcs-style attraction opening near Alton Towers

A new £18 million holiday park is set to be built near Alton Towers with Center Parcs-style attractions.

Moneystone Quarry will feature nearly 200 chalets, plus a bowling alley and swimming pool.

Laver Leisure is transforming the site near Cheadle, in Staffordshire, into an attraction to rival Alton Towers, reports Stoke on Trent live.

There will be an indoor activity area, with 10-pin bowling, soft play, a cinema and climbing wall.

Outside, visitors can explore cycleways, mountain bike trails and footpaths. There will be horse riding, fishing, a water sports centre, archery, a games area, spa and gym.

Other attractions include a restaurant, bar, farm shop, lakeside café with terrace and visitor centre.

People will be able to book in for holidays and it can also be used by local families for day trips.

Plans for the development were unveiled nearly 10 years ago following the closure of the quarry.

Laver Leisure currently operates 13 holiday parks, all in Lincolnshire.

Peter Swallow, of Laver Leisure, said: “Moneystone Park provides a rare opportunity to help diversify the local economy and deliver significant economic, social and environmental benefits for the local area.

“Currently, fewer than seven per cent of Staffordshire’s 24 million annual visitor trips include an overnight stay.

“Moneystone Park will promote a range of overnight and short-stay holiday options for visitors, which will boost the local economy by providing another option to retain tourist spend in the area."

Outline planning permission for the Moneystone development was granted by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council in 2016.

Now a 'reserved matters' application for the first phase of development will be considered.

If approved, the company hopes to start construction next year.

Mr Swallow added: “The development will be an attractive and sustainable recreation facility open to visitors and to the local community. We are taking a major step towards making Moneystone Park a reality.”
