First pictures as Rangers tear Ibrox pitch up for major repairs

Rangers have brought in the heavy artillery as work to tear up and repair the battered Ibrox surface gets underway.

Scottish football might be on lockdown but there's still action of sorts down in Edmiston Drive as tractors rolled into the ground to start work.

Record Sport exclusively revealed on Tuesday night that turf care specialists had spent the day inside the stadium as they get to work on the major repair job.

And our pictures show the ongoing work to get the pitch back to top condition.

The work continues at pace to rip up and replace the surface which took a pounding during a sodden winter with domestic and European action.

With two months of the Scottish season still to run the move suggests Rangers have given up any hope of a rapid return to action amid the coronavirus crisis.

A regular pitch renovation between seasons which includes laying a brand new surface usually takes up to ten weeks to complete.

But Rangers sources insist this job can be done in half that time if the COVID-19 lockdown is suddenly lifted.

An Ibrox spokesman confirmed to Record Sport: “Rangers are carrying out essential works which will be completed within four weeks.

“There is no reasonable expectation that we will be playing football at Ibrox in the next four weeks. Clubs in England have been carrying out similar work in recent weeks.”

SPFL board talks over plans for the current campaign should the Covid-19 pandemic continue to wreak havoc over the summer resume today.

Rangers are thought to be ready to fight any plan which would bring the season to an early end.

It’s understood general manager Stewart Robertson made the club’s position clear during Tuesday's SPFL board meeting.
