First picture released of hero NHS worker who died following coronavirus battle

Hospital chiefs have released a picture of tragic NHS worker Lourdes Campbell who died after a battle with coronavirus.

The 54-year-old - known to friends as Des - was a healthcare assistant who had worked at the Royal Bolton Hospital for almost 13 years.

She passed away on Wednesday night after contracting the disease around two weeks ago.

Bolton NHS Trust CEO Fiona Noden said Mrs Campbell took a 'quiet, diligent and compassionate' approach to caring for her patients and was a "well-liked and valued member of the team".

She added: “This is a terrible and poignant reminder of the situation we are facing every day to help others and I want to thank every member our staff for their continued care for our patients and community.

"Their continued courage and commitment to duty is inspirational and a comfort to us all in these difficult times.”

A post on Facebook announcing Mrs Campbell's death has received nearly 100 messages of love and support from colleagues and members of the public.

Staff from the hospital are asking anyone who wants to share their thoughts to reply to the post, with messages being passed on to her family.
