First picture of tragic mum as murder probe launched after couple found dead in house

A murder investigation has been launched after a couple were found dead in a house in Derbyshire.

Derbyshire Constabulary were called to a house on New Zealand Lane in the village of Duffield at 4.11am on New Year's Day.

Police discovered the bodies of mum-of-three Helen Almey, 39, and her new partner. They are believed to have been stabbed. A man was arrested at the scene.

The Mirror reports that Helen had lived at the house in Duffield, Derbyshire, with husband Rhys Hancock, the father of her children, before they split.

A 39-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of two counts of murder and remains in custody .

Detectives said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

Formal identification of the victims has yet to take place and specially trained liaison officers are supporting their families.

Police said New Zealand Lane has been closed while they investigate and thanked residents for their patience and understanding.

Distressed residents have told of their horror after the double killing shattered their quiet community in the early hours of 2020.

Helen and her boyfriend were found in her £400,000 house by police after a 4am 999 call.

One resident said: "We awoke and the whole street was crawling with police. This is a quiet area so everybody is naturally very shocked."

Another added: "I woke up and had a look outside. I was shocked to see all the police tape attached to my gate."

Derbyshire Police said: "We were called to the house at 4.11am and found a man and a woman fatally injured inside.

"A 39-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.

"Detectives are not looking for anyone else."
