First picture of murdered pensioner as supermarket CCTV shows last time he was seen alive

Hours before David Phillips was murdered by former Ospreys rugby player Tom Carney the pensioner was caught on camera doing his shopping.

The afternoon of Valentine's Day, 2019, saw Mr Phillips in a Neath supermarket buying alcohol before returning to his Cimla flat.

The 76-year-old would later phone Carney – whom he had met at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in the town – and a meeting between the two was arranged.

Carney took a taxi to the victim's Pine Grove flat, arriving around 8.30pm. Less than an hour later the 29-year-old from Morriston brutally murdered the pensioner by repeatedly jumping on his head as he lay on the floor as well as hitting him with a stereo and a stool.

The footage of Mr Phillips is the only known image of the deceased. Following the conclusion of the sentencing hearing on Thursday clips were also released showing Carney being arrested and lashing out at police officers on the night of the murder. See those here.

During the trial it emerged that Mr Phillips was a paedophile with history of sexual offending against boys and young men. At the time he was killed he was subject of a sexual harm prevention order after sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy in Neath.

Neighbours who gave evidence to the jury said Mr Phillips "kept himself to himself" and there were "various rumours" about him locally and he regularly received visits by young men who went to his flat by taxi.

You can recap the full detail of Carney's sentencing hearing, which saw him jailed for life, by going here while this link will let you recap the murder trial in full as it unfolded.
