First picture of man killed by van as fiancee and mother-in-law rushed to hospital

Tributes have been paid to a 'one-in-a-million' Scots man who died after being hit by a van on Saturday.

The 29-year-old, named locally as Craig Wilson, from Motherwell, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident on the A726 Glasgow Road in Strathaven, South Lanarkshire, at around 10.50am on April 1.

Craig's girlfriend Hannah Duddy, 24, and her 52-year-old mum were also struck by the vehicle.

Hannah was taken to Wishaw General Hospital, however has since been discharged. Her mother was taken to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital following the horrific incident, where medics say her condition is "serious but stable".

Craig's best friend Nicholas Neilly posted the tragic news on Facebook yesterday.

He said: "On behalf of the family of Craig Wilson, it is with a heavy heart that I have to announce Craig was involved in a Road Traffic Accident on 01/04/2023 around 11am.

"Sadly, Craig passed away at the scene where he, his Fiancée - Hannah and Hannah’s Mother were also involved. Hannah and her mum are expected to recover.

Craig has been described as a one-in-a-million guy (Facebook)

"For everyone who knew Craig, they would have known how full of life he was and how much he lived life to the full. He was a genuinely one-in-a-million soul and he will be missed more than he would have ever imagined.

"I post this today asking that everyone respects the privacy of the families while they try to process the last 24 hours.

"All our hearts are with his family at this time."

Heartbroken friends and family were quick to share messages of condolences.

Conor Johnstone said: "My heart goes out to everyone involved, rest in peace Wilson. What a guy."

Jacqueline Neilly added: "With a heavy heart I cannot comprehend this. Craig you will be sadly, sadly missed. My other son. Heartbroken. I can’t get my head around this.

"Craig you were crazy, funny and loved."

David McCrum wrote: "Aww man, such a tragedy. Craig was a top class guy, always full of positivity. Thoughts and prayers are with you all."

Kirsty Moffatt said: "Craig was the loveliest person ever. We are all heartbroken for you all. Yous are in our thoughts at this very sad difficult time. He will be sorely missed by many."

Police have since arrested a 47-year-old man in connection with the incident.

He has since been released pending further enquiries.

The road was closed for almost five hours as detectives carried out investigations.

In the meantime, officers have urged anyone who saw the crash, or may have dash-cam footage of the incident unfolding, to get in touch.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Although a number of people assisted at the time, we would still ask for witnesses to the crash, or motorists with dash-cam footage capturing the collision, to get in touch with police.

"Please call officers on 101 quoting reference number 1300 of Saturday, 1 April 2023.
