First picture of 'loving' boy, 13, who died after falling 20 floors from block of flats

A teenager who died after falling 20 storeys from an apartment balcony while doing his homework has been pictured for the first time.

Matthew Pierre, aged 13, fell from the terrace of his family's home in a high rise building in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, on Monday morning.

Police reportedly believe the schoolboy may have taken his own life after officers found "cryptic messages" on his computer, according to the New York Post.

Matthew's mum, Jeri Snead-Pierre, and sister, Nyla, are understood to have been in the apartment at the time, when the boy was found outside the complex.

The apartment building is located at 400 West 43rd Street in New York (Google Streetview)

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The New York City Police Department said he died around 7am on Monday at the Manhattan Plaza at 400 West 43rd Street near Ninth Avenue.

Filmmaker and teacher Ms Snead-Pierre confirmed her child's death the following evening, describing him as her "young King" in a social media post.

"Rest in Power my handsome sweet young King!' she wrote on Instagram

"It is with deep sadness The Pierre family, and the HK community the tragic loss of our beloved son Matthew.

"Thank you all who have been supportive, praying and crying with us.

"We love you and appreciate you. We will definitely need you going forward as the road ahead without him will be tough.

"He always was positive and loving. We will NEVER FORGET YOU!"

Police have previously said Matthew was found with injuries consistent with a fall from a great height.

The 46-storey building is part of Manhattan Plaza, a federally-subsidised housing tower in the Hell's Kitchen area.
