First picture of 'doting' granddad who died when rock smashed into windscreen

This is the first picture of a "doting" grandfather who died when a rock flew off a lorry and smashed his car windscreen.

Steven Oscroft, 60, and his wife were taking two of their four grandchildren out for the day when a rock or lump of concrete hit their Hyundai IX35.

Mr Oscroft, who was driving, was killed in the crash which happened at 11.40am on Tuesday on Netherfield Lane in Perlethorpe cum Budby, Nottinghamshire.

Incredibly, his wife and grandchildren survived the crash unhurt.

Today his devastated family paid tribute to Mr Oscroft, who lived in Shirebrook, Derbyshire.

In a statement issued by Nottinghamshire Police, they said: "Steve was a devoted, husband, father, son and brother and a doting grandad, he was genuine and kind and well loved by all who knew him.

"As a family we are struggling to comprehend the tragic end which resulted after a trip out and fun time with the grandchildren, our lives will never be the same again and we can now only cherish those special memories in our hearts."

Police are hunting a beige coloured truck which was seen shedding part of its load shortly before the fatal crash.

Family Liaison Officer PC Joanna Baxter said: "Mr Oscroft's family are devastated by his death in such tragic circumstances and it was obviously an incredibly traumatic ordeal for his wife and two grandchildren.

"Thankfully they escaped unhurt.

"We are working hard to establish how the incident happened to give the family some answers and we would appeal to anyone who may have information that may help the enquiry to come forward as soon as possible.

"We are particularly appealing for anyone that may have seen a large beige coloured cabbed truck that may be discarding its load in the area around the time of the collision.

"We are also appealing for any dashcam footage which may show this vehicle."

Anyone who has information which could help the investigation should call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 275 of 7 July 2020
