First picture of British dad found dead floating in Canary Island hotel pool

A British holidaymaker whose dead body was found floating in a Canary Island hotel pool has been pictured for the first time.

Hotel workers and paramedics tried to revive 53-year-old dad Iain McKellar after he was British tourist, 53, found dead floating in Canary Island hotel pool at his three-star hotel in Fuerteventura just before 1am.

Authorities believe he went into a cardiac arrest while he was at the Hotel Oasis Village in Corralejo in the north of the island.

But sadly the dad was pronounced dead at the scene, despite a 45-minute attempt to revive him.

It is understood Iain was on holiday with his wife, Yvonne, the Daily Record reports.

Sources said the couple arrived from Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, Scotland.

Father-of-one Iain, 53, ran a successful seaweed company on the island called Just Seaweed.

He opened a store in Rothesay in 2017 after selling seaweed over the Internet for 10 years.

Iain previously worked as a truck driver and tanker driver for the old Rothesay Creamery.

Yesterday, his 13-year-old son Finlay posted a picture on Facebook of him standing next to his dad.

Underneath, friends posted tributes to the businessman.

Donna Currie wrote: “Thinking of you and your mum.”

Local councillors paid tribute to Iain. Provost Len Scoullar said: “As a community we offer our most sincere condolences to Mr McKellar’s family and friends.”

Civil Guard officers have now launched an inquiry.

A spokesman for the emergency services centre said: “A 53-year-old British man has been pronounced dead after being found floating in a swimming pool in the municipality of La Oliva in Fuerteventura.

“We received an alert at 12.52am from a hotel reception informing us a person had been found floating in the water.

“An emergency response was immediately activated and private health workers at the hotel and emergency responders tried to revive the man who had gone into cardiac arrest.

“But none of the attempts to save his life were successful and a doctor from a local health centre subsequently confirmed his death.

“Civil Guard officers have taken charge of the case. Local police cooperated with the emergency response.”

A source close to the investigation added: “The dead man was on holiday with his partner.

“He was found in the pool by a night security guard and another tourist who made an unsuccessful attempt to save his life.

“There were no external signs of physical injuries or the participation of other people in what happened but officers are awaiting the results of the autopsy which should determine the cause of death.”

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: “We are aware of a British man who has died in Fuerteventura and are in touch with the relevant authorities.”
