First picture of boy, 3, who drowned during family holiday in Alicante

This is the first picture of a toddler who drowned yesterday during a family holiday in Spain.

Avery James Greene was found face down in a swimming pool at an apartment complex in Cabo Roig, Alicante.

Devastated friends called him a "wonderful" and "fantastic" youngster, Irish Mirror says.

Paudie Dineen, who is close friends with the family from Cork, Ireland, said the relatives have been "rocked to the core".

"We know the family very well, my wife Sandra grew up with the boy's mother Amanda, they were like sisters," said the councillor.

"It is a very tough time for everyone and our thoughts and prayers are with the families at this very tough time.

"Everyone is just thinking of them at this tough time and they have our full support."

It is understood the tragedy happened while the youngster's dad Eric was en route to join his son and mum Amanda.

Investigators believe he may have slipped away from his grandparents and fallen in the pool at around breakfast time.

Tourists dragged him out but he had already lost consciousness.

Four police officers who rushed to the scene found the young boy to be unresponsive and "very cold".

The police performed emergency resuscitation and the child responded, showing some signs of life.

A doctor and an air ambulance crew worked for over two hours by the side of the pool to stabilise the child before rushing him by helicopter to hospital, where he tragically lost his fight for life in the early hours of this morning.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and the Irish Embassy in Madrid is assisting the family at this time.
