First photo of mum found dead in tragic hospital accident that also killed baby

A new mum found dead on a hospital floor with her newborn baby has been named as friends and family pay tribute.

Marie Downey was tragically discovered dead on Monday morning at Cork University Maternity Hospital in Ireland.

Her newborn son Darragh also died shortly before 7pm on Tuesday despite best efforts of doctors.

Marie, who was in her 30s, is believed to have died in a freak accident while breastfeeding Darragh, who was found underneath his mum.

Today tributes have been paid to Marie and her baby boy, reports Irish Mirror.

One person said: "R.I.P our thoughts and prayers are for both families.

"Thinking of you all at this sad time."

The hospital confirmed that the baby sadly passed away on Tuesday evening after suffering serious injuries.

Marie, a mum-of-three, was originally from Ballyagran, Co Limerick but was living in Kildorrery, Co Cork with husband Kieran.

A death notice for her read: "The death has occurred of Marie Downey and Baby Darragh, Knockanevin, Kildorrery, Co. Cork and formerly of Ballyagran, Co. Limerick, unexpectedly on March 25th with her beautiful baby boy Darragh.

"Deeply mourned by her heartbroken husband Kieran, her adored sons and Darragh's big brothers James and Sean, her loving parents Jim and Helen, parents-in-law Tom and Alma, brother-in-law Patrick, sisters-in-law, Una, Fiona, Ellen and Mairead, aunts, uncles, relatives, neighbours and many friends."

The hospital confirmed that a full medical investigation into the tragic deaths has been launched.

A statement said: "As with all unexplained deaths a full medical investigation was immediately initiated. This investigation is currently under way at CUMH.

It is believed that Marie suffered a sudden medical episode that caused her to fall from her bed with her child in her arms.

Staff found the caring mother lying on the floor at 8am on Monday morning.

A post-mortem is due to take place today.

Colleagues of Marie, who worked at Novartis Pharmaceutical in Ringaskiddy, Co Cork, said: "Marie Downey was a valued member of our team here at Novartis Ringaskiddy.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Marie's family and friends during this very difficult time. Marie will be fondly remembered here at Novartis Ringaskiddy."
