First Orange walk in more than a decade planned in Scottish town

A SCOTTISH coastal town is set to host its first Orange walk in more than a decade this weekend.

According to organisers, a parade will take place in the Helensburgh on Sunday, May 4 — coinciding with Rangers playing Celtic at Ibrox Stadium, which kicks off at 12pm.

The SPFL confirmed the Premiership post-split fixtures in mid-April, with the derby starting just hours before this weekend's event.

A social media post in the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland Facebook group earlier this week said the gathering will begin at around 2pm.

The online notice stated: "Obviously, this date was set before the split was announced.

"We hope our brothers and sisters will still come and support us.

"This will be the first time we have paraded in Helensburgh since 2014 and we would love a good turnout."

It is stated that Orange Order members joining Sunday's procession will meet at 1.45pm at Kidston Park before the parade sets off at 2pm.

It is not known how many people are expected to be involved.

Argyll and Bute Council does not publish a list of public procession licence applications, however, notices are displayed in council buildings for a period of 28 days.

A massive Orange walk previously passed through the town 11 years ago, with 3500 people marching and thousands more lining the streets in support.

At the time, the County Grand Orange Lodge of Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, and Argyll said "it will be about another 39 years before it's ever back in Helensburgh".

The procession attracted widespread backlash in the weeks leading up to it, but passed "without incident", according to police in 2014.
