First of the Summer Wine

Our Branch Hill allotments, open this weekend. Photo: BHAA

Hold the homepage! We might be putting in a personal appearance up at the Observer Allotment this weekend. But you won't find us burying beers traps (thanks for all the tips, by the way, slug assassins). No, we fully intend to be sipping Loire Valley wines in green surroundings. The Branch Hill allotments (you know, where we've been avoiding doing any hard labour) are part of 2007's London Open Squares Weekend.

Apparently every year over a hundred secret gardens and squares open their gates to the public for two days only. And the best news? Free booze! We've done a bit of research (courtesy of the official garden selector) and there are 42 gardens serving free wine. That's quite a pub crawl.

Would you recommend any of the 160 gardens involved this year (all listed on their website)? Don't worry if they don't serve wine, we can always bring a hip flask.
