'First of its kind': Hunter battery slated for this year

MEGAPACK: Enova Community Energy announced the Heddon Greta battery will be a one-megawatt Tesla model.

THE Hunter's battery blitz is set to continue, with a pilot project involving the University of Newcastle aiming to install a one-megawatt battery near Heddon Greta this year.

The Beehive Project, a collaboration between Enova Community Energy, Ausgrid and the university says it plans to install a Tesla Megapack at the township's substation before the end of the year.

The project is a trial of a shared community battery and peer-to-peer solar energy trading project. It will involve up to 500 households and is designed to look at how rooftop solar power and battery storage can operate.

The Beehive Project is described as the only project of its kind in Australia.

The battery will store power to distribute among properties that are not necessarily physically close to the battery. Households can register to participate online, with a Q&A video conference planned for 6pm on Tuesday.

The project received funding through the state government's Regional Community Energy Fund.

The research project follows the announcement of several major battery projects for the Hunter.

Origin Energy announced in January that it would pursue approval for a 700-megawatt battery at Eraring power station, while last week backers unveiled a 1200-megawatt proposal for Kurri Kurri's Hunter Economic Zone.
