First of its kind bowling club for the visually impaired opens in South Lanarkshire

A new bowling club for the visually impaired has been formed in East Kilbride after 'come and try' sessions bowled folk over.

Sessions were held at East Kilbride Indoor Bowling Club, with coaching input from Visually Impaired Bowls Scotland (VIBS).

Volunteers also helped on the day as guides acting as the eyes for those with visual impairments.

And the event proved to be such a success that organiser, Dominic Everett, confirmed East Kilbride will have the first club of its kind specifically for the visually impaired in South Lanarkshire.

Dominic told Lanarkshire Live : "I played bowls for years as partially sighted but as my vision worsened I was unable to play and compete against fully sighted people.

"I became aware of VIBS and I reached out to them to try and see if we could create something in East Kilbride.

"The free sessions we held were really successful and I'm delighted to say we will now form a club in the town.

"Thanks also to the volunteers who came along and helped on the day too.

"It's very much in its infancy but I would like to see more people from across East Kilbride joining us and would urge anyone interested to come along.

"Ultimately, I would like to get funding and play games against other visually impaired bowling clubs and while running it indoors over the winter, in May, play outdoors. So we would eventually have both indoor and outdoor games throughout the year.

"Throughout the COVID pandemic a lot of visually impaired people have been very isolated and this is a good opportunity to make friends, there is a real social element to it, and to re-engage with society."

The club will meet as of this Friday, on a weekly basis, from 11.30am to 1.30pm at the indoor bowling club across from the John Wright Sports Centre with plans to expand as it becomes more established.
