First NHS Nightingale hospital patients admitted after officially reopening

The first patients have been admitted to the Nightingale Hospital for the North West after it officially reopened.

The Manchester hospital has accepted a small number of patients on Wednesday night, who are being 'stepped-down' in preparation for discharge.

The hospitals were built in the summer to deal with cases overflowing from existing hospitals at the height of the first wave.

The Nightingale hospital will this time have a different function, instead treating patients who do not have coronavirus.

The temporary facility at Manchester Central Convention Complex, formerly known as the G-Mex, opened in April, but has been closed since the summer.

The first ward has been commissioned by Manchester Foundation Trust, which will run the facility alongside agency staff sourced by NHS Professionals, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The new model for Manchester's Nightingale is the only overflow to be using the facility in this way, using it for patients who require 'additional rehabilitation'.

This means that unlike the first wave, it will be used by patients who are not ready to return home after spending time in hospital for non-Covid related reasons.

Some patients who were admitted to hospital with Covid-19 but are still recovering could also be sent to the facility, NHS England has confirmed.

NHS Trusts wanting to use the extra bed capacity will have to give NHS England two weeks' notice and send their own staff to work at the facility.
