First named Scots victim of coronavirus is Greenock dad with no underlying health issues

The first Scottish victim of coronavirus to be named was a “happy and smiling” dad with no underlying health issues.

Danny Cairns, 68, from Greenock, is understood to have died this morning at Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

The popular grandfather and dad to three sons was well known locally and started Wemyss Bay Bible Club, where he used to live, with his wife Eunice, 63.

He was also a football coach with Wemyss Bay Colts and with the primary school team in Inverclyde.

It’s understood he was taken to hospital on Monday and never recovered from Covid-19, despite not having any other known health problems.

Danny’s brother Hugh Cairns and his wife Faye, who live in California, said he was “loved and respected by all who came in contact with him” and was a “genuine, gentle, giving  and kind Christian man“.

Faye said: “It is devastating to say the least. I don’t know how Hugh is going to cope losing his lifetime best friend and brother.

"We love you Danny. You always kept us in stitches and many times at your own expense.

“There are no words of how much we will miss you.“

Tributes have been paid to Mr Cairns on a Greenock community page.

His former minister, Rev Michael Schrimshire and his wife Christine, said in a Facebook tribute: “We are so sorry to hear about your dad, he was a true friend to us and was always happy and smiling. “Please tell your mum that she and the family are in our prayers.”

The number of coronavirus deaths in Scotland has risen by three to 25 today as confirmed cases rise to 894.

Nicola Sturgeon revealed 175 new positive cases were confirmed overnight.
