First Minister shares condolences following death of young man in her community

The First Minister has shared her condolences with the family of a young man who has died in a road crash.

Police said earlier that the Belfast Road between Fivemiletown and Brookeborough had been closed following a "serious crash".

It is understood a car and motorbike were involved.

Arlene Foster posted on social media: "Heartbreaking news from my neighbourhood this evening. Our prayers are with this young man's family who have been plunged into unimaginable grief. Please remember them."

Fermanagh UUP councillor Victor Warrington said he knows the young man's family.

He added: "It is very sad for a family coming up to Christmas. There is never a good time of year but certainly coming up to Christmas leaves it more difficult.

"This particular bit of road unfortunately has had numerous fatalities in the last few years.

"Unfortunately this is yet another one. We are obviously in difficult times at the minute with the lockdowns and Covid and something like this just adds more heartache."

A PSNI spokesperson said earlier: "The Belfast Road between Fivemiletown and Brookeborough has been closed in both directions following a serious road traffic collision. Diversions are in place."

Ambulance service spokesman John McPoland said: "The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 18:03 on Wednesday 16 December following reports of a RTC on Belfast Road, Brookeborough, involving a motorcycle and a car.

"NIAS dispatched two Rapid Response Paramedics, one Emergency crew and an ambulance officer to the incident.

"No patients were taken from the scene."
