First Minister plans to carry out 850 more COVID-19 test per day

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has today announced plans to extend testing to all care home staff and residents.

Meanwhile, today's online figures show a total of 54,639 COVID-19 tests have carried out been carried out in Scotland.

Mrs Sturgeon said Scotland now has capacity to carry out 4350 coronavirus tests a day in NHS laboratories - an increase of 850 test per day.

Confirmed numbers from the Scottish Government stand at 762 today - an increase of seventeen new cases.

The latest figures show 11,353 people in Scotland have been diagnosed with the coronavirus.

Tragically, the death toll for the country now stands at 1,475 - an increase of 60.

The number of NHS Ayrshire & Arran patients in intensive care within the health board's region with suspected or confirmed coronavirus stood at five at midnight.

Meanwhile, the number of people in hospital with confirmed or suspected coronavirus at midnight was 109 – three fewer than yesterday.

The Scottish Government provided the figures this afternoon as part of its daily update on how the virus is affecting the country.

Symptoms of coronavirus...

The symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • a cough
  •  
  • a high temperature
  •  
  • shortness of breath
  •  

But these symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness.

The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu.

How to avoid catching or spreading coronavirus...

  • wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
  •  
  •   always wash your hands when you get home or into work
  •  
  •   use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

       
  •   cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze
  •  
  •   put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards

       
  •   try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell

       
  •   do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean
