First Minister Nicola Sturgeon visits West Lothian school to see coronavirus safety measures

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was in West Lothian this week to see for herself what preparations are in place to welcome pupils back safely.#

And after visiting West Calder High School she said she was “impressed and reassured” by the measures she had seen to protect students and staff.

She was at West Calder High School on Monday morning to evaluate some of the new measures in place before schools across the country began a phased return yesterday (Wednesday).

Staff showed her what will be in place, including sanitising stations, staggered breaks and a new ordering app for school lunches and hot meals.

Later on Monday, at her coronavirus daily briefing, she praised the school for the work they have put in over the last few weeks, adding: “I was really impressed and reassured this morning by what I saw of the preparations at West Calder and I know these are being repeated in schools all across the country.”

The First Minister continued: “I think it is worth saying that for students and staff school will feel different to how it was before.

“There will for example be a lot more hand washing, some schools will have staggered starts and lunch breaks, and at West Calder school lunches will have to be ordered on an app.

“I know that there will be anxiety for students parents and teachers this week and I think that is entirely understandable,

“All of us know that the reopening of schools is important for children’s education, personal development, general wellbeing and happiness.”
