First Minister Nicola Sturgeon urges public to follow Government advice amid Boris blunder

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has taken to social media in a bid to instill confidence in the Scottish public, following the UK Government's 2020 Christmas party blunder.

However, in the middle of the Downing Street allegations, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also announced new restrictions for England as the Omicron variant rages through the UK.

A 'Plan B' style of restrictions will be instated south of the border from Monday December 13, as these rules will see Covid vaccine passports used for large events in the country.

People are now being asked to work from home, and the reintroduction of the mandatory requirement to wear a face mask in the majority of public spaces.

After this announcement was made by the PM, the First Minister took to her social media accounts to question the strength of these measures in England in order to tackle the Omicron variant.

Nicola Sturgeon also pleaded with the public to follow the guidelines set in place across the country, despite if they "felt angry" with the behaviour of the UK Government.

In a tweet last night, the First Minister said: "Re UK gov announcement of Covid Plan B today, all these protections are already in place in Scotland and have helped us get Delta cases down.

"Tough question we all face in period ahead is whether these protections will be strong enough against a rapidly spreading Omicron variant...

"Even if (and it is still if) Omicron doesn’t cause more severe disease, the numbers of people who might be infected by its faster spread will create big challenges for NHS and economy - so we need to consider carefully (but quite quickly) what proportionate response needed.

"In meantime, all of us complying strictly with current protections will help. And even if you feel angry with a politician just now, please remember just how important compliance is for the health & safety of you, your loved ones and the country."

Earlier this week, Edinburgh Live reported that the First Minister announced that Scotland will see home-working rules be enforced until 2022 due to the surge in Omicron Covid cases.

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that those who can be working at home should be until January as infection rates continue to rise around the country.

The First Minister announced the measure in an update to the Scottish Parliament, due to concerns over the new variant, which has seen cases rise tenfold in the last week.

After stating that none of the existing coronavirus measures would be revoked, Sturgeon urged that employers should "ensure this is happening."

In recent weeks, the Scottish Government had advised businesses to encourage home-working again, however Tuesday's announcement stated that anyone working from home in the previous lockdowns should do so again.
