First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to give urgent Omicron coronavirus update today

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will give a press briefing this afternoon after cases of both the Delta and Omicron variant continued to rise in Scotland.

On Tuesday, the First Minister gave new guidance for anyone who was working at home at the start of the pandemic to do so again to curb the spread.

The briefing will be at 12:15pm today at St Andrew's House in Edinburgh today, alongside chief medical officer Gregor Smith and national clinical director Jason Leitch.

It comes as Public Health Scotland urged Scots to postpone their Christmas parties after a number of Omicron cases were linked to similar events.

109 cases of Omicron have now been reported in Scotland in total, with 3,149 total cases of coronavirus reported across the country on Thursday alone.

She will give an opening statement on the latest figures in Scotland and announce any measures, if any, that will be introduced across the country.

Public Health Scotland have also issued urgent guidance for people to postpone their Christmas parties, after revealing that a number of Omicron cases have been linked to such events.

3,196 new coronavirus cases were reported in Scotland as a whole, with 529 of these being registered in the NHS Lothian health board area.

16 deaths were also registered in the last 24 hours.
