First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to be told 'straightening a couple of bends on the A77 isn't good enough'

Campaigners plan to tell First Minister Nicola Sturgeon that straightening a couple of bends on the A77 is not good enough.

Donald McHarrie and the A77 Action Group met with Scottish Labour Leader Anas Sarwar and fellow Labour MSP Colin Smyth recently.

They now hope to join the MSP in meeting the First Minister in person to talk about the vital importance of both the A77 and A75.

Mr Sarwar is also set to write to the UK and Scottish Governments, along with the heads of with the Ayrshire and Borderlands Growth Deals to have both the A77 and A75 works enshrined in their future planning.

Mr McHarrie said: “We felt Mr Sarwar listened to what we had to say and agreed that both the A77 and the A75 needed a commitment from the SNP Scottish Government to upgrade the roads.

“Mr Sarwar has taken away a number of action points to write to the Leaders of Ayrshire Growth Deal and the Borderlands Growth Deal to have these arterial roads included in their future plans for infrastructure improvements.

Mr McHarrie added that the Labour MSP had promised to contact the Scottish and UK Governments to "impress on them the need for closing working for the benefit of the whole of the South West of Scotland in its links to the rest of Scotland, the UK and Europe and Northern Ireland."

A meeting at Holyrood with the First Minister would have the most impact, he said: "This is crucial for us to impress on the First Minister that we don’t just want a couple of bends straightened of a few passing places created from the STPR2 Review."
