First Minister Nicola Sturgeon launches volunteer scheme Scotland Cares to help tackle coronavirus

Nicola Sturgeon has announced a new campaign to recruit a volunteer army to help battle the coronavirus pandemic.

Scotland Cares will be launched tomorrow and anyone interested is urged to visit their website when it is activated to see what roles are available.

The programme will allow people to register their interest on ReadyScotland.org

It will be a collaborative effort among the Scottish Government, the NHS and other partners such as charities.

Returning health and social care workers will be directed to existing programmes while those who wish to volunteer more generally can sign up to become a Community Reserve Volunteer.

The programme will be coordinated by the Red Cross and a wider campaign will launch on TV and radio from Monday.

A similar volunteer scheme has been launched in England - attracting an army of more than 750,000.

There had been growing calls for a volunteering campaign to be set up north of the border.

Sturgeon said: "Many people who are currently fit and healthy, and perhaps no longer, for the time being, at work or at university and are looking for other ways to help.

"Over the past week the Scottish government has been working with a number of partners to find the best way to tap into and utilise that desire to help.

"So tomorrow I can give advance notice that we will be launching a new campaign called Scotland Cares - which will encourage people to volunteer if they are in a position to do so and make it easier for them to register their interest in doing so.

"This means people who are able to will be able to contribute in a way that makes a real difference within your local community- and it will help us help each other as we all seek to get through this."

Addressing concerns over a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers, Sturgeon said 34 million items have been delivered to hospitals over the past four to six weeks and that health boards now have a "single point of contact for managing PPE distribution".

Eight weeks' worth of PPE will be delivered to GP surgeries this week, she added, and additional staff will be employed to meet the demand in the social care sector for the items.

Sturgeon also confirmed that the armed forces are considering establishing a new hospital facility at the Exhibition Centre in Glasgow.

The number of deaths in Scotland rose to 41 today with the nation bracing itself for a rising tide of fatalities in the next few weeks.
