First Minister Mark Drakeford says more people could be allowed to meet in Wales in April

The Welsh Government will look at allowing “greater household contact” for the second half of April, First Minister Mark Drakeford has said.

But he did warn that mixing inside people's homes is "one of the most dangerous things” with coronavirus.

He was speaking at the latest coronavirus briefing on Friday (March 12) where it was announced that four people from two households would be able to meet in private gardens. See live updates from the briefing here.

In an interview with WalesOnline, he said the three things he will be signalling for the second half of April is whether we can do more for households getting together, as well as when gyms and outside hospitality areas can re-open.

It won't be before then. Mixing indoors is the most risky thing that we can do and we know that some of the difficulties we got into before Christmas were from excessive household mixing. So it won't be before mid April but it will be on the list of things to think about in the second half of April.

Mr Drakeford said household mixing “was undoubtedly part of the difficulties we got ourselves into in the weeks running up to Christmas”.

He added that being able to meet in gardens from Saturday, March 13, will make “a big difference”.

“Up until now, you've only been able to leave your own home, locally and for purposes of exercise,” Mr Drakeford said.

“Now you will be able to travel in your own local area, four people will be able to meet from two households for any purpose - not just exercise - and, very importantly, people will be able to meet in gardens.

“I have letters from elderly people in particular who just aren't well enough to be able to walk to the park so they haven't seen grandchildren or other family members for weeks and weeks.

“And now they will be able to meet people in their own gardens, under the circumstances that we described, and that will make a very big difference to lots of people here in Wales.”

Mr Drakeford added that “on the journey that we are on, in the second half of April - if everything continues to go well - we will consider what we can do to allow people to meet in the way that I completely understand people miss and want to be able to resume.”
