First Minister Mark Drakeford calls emergency cabinet meeting over new strain of coronavirus

Welsh Government ministers are meeting to discuss "serious concerns" about a new strain of coronavirus after a surge in cases.

Following a discussion with representatives from all four nations of the UK on Saturday [December 19], First Minister Mark Drakeford announced that he would be meeting with his cabinet this afternoon.

Writing on Twitter, he said: "I attended a four nation call earlier today to discuss serious concerns over the spread of a new Covid variant.

"I will chair a meeting of the Welsh Government Cabinet at 2pm today."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to give a press conference at 4pm on Saturday, reportedly in response to a surge in virus cases in certain parts of England.

The new strain of coronavirus is believed to spread more quickly, according to England's chief medical officer Professor Chris Witty.

It comes just days before the relaxed rules for families meeting at Christmas across the UK begin on December 23.

Wales will enter Tier 4 restrictions on December 28, with heavy restrictions in place until they are reviewed on January 15.
