First Minister Arlene Foster speaks out on Northern Ireland hotels, nurseries and wakes

Hotels are set to remain open on a restricted basis as Arlene Foster offered some clarity around tightened restrictions amid rising coronavirus infection rates.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday evening, the First Minister said hotels would be able to remain open but on a restricted basis.

This includes accommodating those who are residents at hotels and providing rooms for staff on the front line, vulnerable people in emergency situations and those who can not return to their own home.

Bars in hotels should close.

She said: "If you are a resident by 6pm on Friday you can remain in the hotel."

Self catering and rented holiday accommodation can stay open.

Mrs Foster said the action being taken was to cause the maximum damage to the virus but minimum to the public.

“This is not a lockdown” she added.

“We want everyone to act responsibly.

“This is what is needed urgently to save lives and to save jobs.

“These measures become law tomorrow and if you break the law, expect to feel the full consequences.”

During the press conference Mrs Foster said private pre-schools, nurseries and day care centres could stay open to accommodate working parents.

She also clarified that deceased loved ones can be brought home but that wakes cannot be held.

She also stated that close contact services which have to close include: hairdressers, barbers, nail bars, beauticians, complimentary therapies, make-up artists, spas, tattoo studios, dress fitters, tailors and fashion designers.

Further details about the new restrictions are expected this evening.
