First Merseyside coronavirus death confirmed as Wirral patient dies

The first recorded death at a Merseyside hospital of a person who has tested positive for the coronavirus has come in Wirral.

NHS England have just released new statistics that show that a further 46 people who tested positive for the virus have died in England in the past 24 hours.

That takes the total number of reported deaths in England to 303.

Patients were aged between 47 and 105 years old and all had underlying health conditions.

Their families have been informed.

NHS England have provided a list of all the hospital trusts where patients died in the past 24 hours.

The list confirms that one of those that died was a patient at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Arrowe Park Hospital.

The Trust has now confirmed the details of the death.

Janelle Holmes, Chief Executive at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, said:

“Sadly, we can confirm that a man who was being cared for at Arrowe Park Hospital, and had tested positive for COVID-19, has died.

“The patient was aged 78 and had underlying health conditions.

“His family have been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult and distressing time.”
