The 2019 Oscars ceremony is fast approaching, where we'll see films including A Star is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody and The Favourite vying for a coveted golden statue.
One contender is First Man, which explores the life of Neil Armstrong and his life-changing decision to go to the moon in 1969.
With four Oscar nominations for Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Mixing, Best Production Design and Best Sound Editing, director Damien Chazelle and Claire Foy (who plays Armstrong’s wife Janet) revealed what it took to shoot the film's moon landing scene.
Chazelle revealed the scene was the most challenging to film, saying all the “bigger space sequences - the moon in particular” were the hardest. Chazelle, who directed other Oscar-winning films like La La Land and Whiplash, explained that the scene was “shot outside on a quarry at night” and required a huge amount of preparation.
He said, “Things kept going wrong and it wound up being many more nights than we had planned.”
The 91st Academy Awards will be broadcast on 25th Feburary (in UK time), with red carpet arrivals beginning at 12am. First Man can now be watched on Amazon Prime and is also available on Blu-Ray and DVD.
