First look: New Italian craft beer bar and restaurant Doppio Malto takes over former Jamie's Kitchen space in Glasgow

A top Italian craft beer bar and restaurant group has just announced the opening of its first-ever UK venue in Glasgow.

Taking over the former Jamie's Kitchen site in the city's George Square, the new venue will offer a little taste of Italy with its premium beer and top food offering.

Doppio Malto - meaning ‘double malt’ - is set over two floors comprising a ground-floor beer lounge, a sweeping 180-cover restaurant, and an open ‘cucina’ kitchen.

It will also feature a basement bar, including an Italian ‘giardino’ area with eye catching glass ceilings and traditional Terrazzo flooring.

Opening today (Friday, August 13) Doppio Malto Glasgow will offer a wide selection of Italian dishes including homemade pizzas, pastas, specialty meats cooked-on-the-grill and luscious Italian desserts.

The interior includes a fitting tribute to Glasgow’s weather; a ceiling installation featuring 55 umbrellas, located on the ground level.

In the basement, guests can relax on large-scale ‘steps’ inspired by stadium seating - the perfect spot to hang out with an ice-cold beer.

Doppio Malto CEO and founder, Giovanni Porcu, said: "Today is a momentous day for Doppio Malto. We are so proud to have opened our doors here in the UK - more specifically in George Square, the iconic centrepiece of Glasgow. ‌

"Italy and Scotland have many links, going back centuries, so it was the natural choice for our debut UK venue and we are so grateful for the warm welcome.”

The restaurateur says the new venue will mirror their motto “un posto felice” - which means a ‘happy place’.

He said: "Everything we do is designed around feeling good - from the food and beer to the service and physical space, and we are so excited to bring this unique concept to the UK for the very first time."

Doppio Malto launched in 2016 and now operates 26 venues throughout Italy and France. Following a period of rapid growth, Doppio Malto’s goal is to open 100 brewhouses throughout the UK. After Glasgow, the brand has its sights set on a Newcastle opening before the end of the year.

Creating over 50 jobs, the exciting new venue will open 7-days-a-week - 12pm-Midnight from Sunday to Thursday; 12pm-1am every Friday; and 11.30am-1am every Saturday.
