First look inside UWE’s new multi-million pound science lab

The University of the West of England has opened a new science lab following a £7million redevelopment project.

The Lab Zone includes state-of-the-art laboratories, with research and teaching spaces, that will be used by more than 1,000 undergraduate and post-graduate students.

A post-grad research centre has also been built, which will provide facilities for masters and PhD research students.

Dr Lyn Newton, head of the department of applied sciences, said: “We’ve always had a vision of bringing the labs together and making them better connected.

“These new labs are vastly improved, with better lighting, flooring and surfaces, all resulting in an improved teaching and learning experience.

Bristol now most connected UK city after London

“This is significant investment for our students and I’m pleased the work is now complete. Our students will benefit from the enhanced facilities and develop the lab skills needed for the latest jobs in industry.”

Professor Steven Neill, pro vice-chancellor and executive dean for the faculty of health and applied sciences, says the project was a "complex multi-million pound investment by the university".

He added: "[They] will attract and support future students, staff and research investment for years to come.

“I’d like to congratulate our dedicated staff for the excellent teamwork across the university that made this project possible and successful.”
