First look inside The Whitchurch pub following £200,000 refurbishment

A community pub opened its doors to the public last night following a £200,000 refurbishment.

The Whitchurch pub, in Oatlands Avenue, Whitchurch, was closed for two weeks while the extensive changes were made.

The pub is owned by Greene King, which has now introduced a new Flaming Grill menu and a wider selection of drinks.

Money has been spent on a selection of the pub's interior, with its kitchen having the biggest upgrade.

The pub's manager, Charlene McAvoy, who has been running it for 12 years said she hopes the pub now caters for everyone.

She added: “We’ve got the kids play area, so that’s the family side, the pool table and new TVs, so that’s the sport side, and a new menu which we’ll be serving.”

Food will be served  from 12-9pm from Mondays to Thursdays, 12-9.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays and from noon until 8.30pm on Sundays.

The refurbishment has seen the pub benefit from a brand new kitchen and a wider drink selection.

“The kitchen is the biggest change as it is now a Flaming Grill pub,” Charlene said.

“The value of the food has changed. We’re offering deals whereas before we didn’t.

“We’ve got a wider set of ales, and now Thatchers Rose and San Miguel, which we didn’t have before.

“Our spirit range has changed quite a bit as gin is big at the moment.

“We also offer a wider range of drinks for kids. Before we just had coke.”

'An awesome team'

She added: “The Whitchurch is a community pub, so we’d quite like to run it as we did before.

“We’ve had locals come in asking if we needed help with anything. We do work as a community.

“Previously we’ve run charity days. And this is something we are still hoping to do.”

Mark Howe, Greene King’s business development manager, said: “We’ve inherited a fantastic pub, with an awesome team. They’ve worked incredibly hard to get it back up and running. I think it’s going to be a great addition to the community.

"We’ve already got a strong customer base and hopefully what we’ve bought will help enhance that.”
