First look inside squatted High Street properties as police enforce closure order

Police have released footage from inside one of the squatted properties on High Street as they enforced a closure order earlier today (June 4).

Officers arrived on High Street at around 6am after Avon and Somerset Police secured a closure order on the three occupied properties yesterday (June 3).

The force says this was necessary as there had been "escalating criminality and antisocial behaviour (ASB)" at 39-40, 45 and 46 High Street — addresses which squatters have occupied over recent weeks.

On arrival there this morning, officers had to remove a barricade from one of the doors - which included a fridge freezer and a washing machine - but found all the properties were empty.

Police have said there has been extensive damage done to the three properties, including litter and graffiti.

The footage that has now been released by the force shows a large hole in one of the walls, as well as graffiti.

The graffiti on the walls includes the international squatters symbol and the writing "the land belongs to us all" next to the symbol.

There is further writing on the other side of the symbol but this is illegible on the video.

A few posters can also be seen attached to the walls, together with quite a lot of rubble on the floor.

Chief inspector for north central Bristol, Rob Cheeseman, said: "Our objectives were to come here and make sure all the premises were empty and that there was nobody illegally on any of those premises.

"We've managed to gain entry to all three of those locations and we were able to confirm that there was nobody left inside those illegally on the premises.

"We're now in the process of securing these to make sure that they can be preserved for the next 28 days.

"Inside some of the buildings they are messy, there's lots of litter inside and graffiti.

"There is some extensive damage and reports that there has been a wall knocked down inside.

"There's a lot of work to be done by the property owners to get it back to the state it was before it was occupied."
