First look inside renowned fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh's new book in collaboration with Dior

Ripples of sadness spread throughout the fashion industry when news broke in September that renowned photographer, Peter Lindbergh, had died.

But before 74-year-old Lindbergh passed away, he had embarked on a collaboration with the House of Dior to create what would sadly prove to be his final book project.

The concept behind the Taschen tome, named Dior by Peter Lindbergh, intended to highlight the French fashion house's archive - spanning 70 years - in a new and more contemporary way.

Lindbergh assembled an army of supermodels, including Alek Wek, Amber Valletta and Irina Shayk, and shot them in a selection of 80 archive Dior looks, which he had transported over from the Dior HQ in Paris all the way to New York.

The result is the hefty coffee table book, comprised of two volumes.

There's an array of vintage Dior looks: from '90s-era haute couture pieces circa John Galliano to an original 1947 Christian Dior Bar jacket, all photographed on the frenetic streets of New York City.

Commenting before his sudden passing, Lindbergh said: "While Haute Couture is closely linked with an idea of perfection and the mastery of every last detail, I wanted to transport 70 years of Dior creations to an unexpected place. The streets of New York embody the most contrasting background to reveal unforeseen emotions.”

Dior was founded in 1947 in Paris and is now while Lindbergh started his career in 1971 as he opened his own photography studio, joining the Stern magazine family alongside the likes of Guy Bourdin and Helmut Newton.

Prior to his death, Lindbergh also collaborated with the Duchess of Sussex on the September issue of British Vogue, which she guest-edited and for which he shot the cover.

Dior by Peter Lindbergh is released on December 5 and is available for pre-order now. It retails for £150.
