First look inside new Glasgow bakehouse Sweet Jane

Glasgow Live has been given a first look at new neighbourhood bakery Sweet Jane that will swing open its doors this Saturday (March 14) in the east end of the city.

From the team behind popular brunch spot Mesa, the bakehouse has taken over the old cactus shop unit across the road from its sister spot on Duke Street.

They will be serving up delicious bread and sweet stuff, plus a select amount of amazing Spanish imported goods.

Sweet Jane (a nod to the Velvet Underground) takes the name given to their second-hand bread mixer that they will be using in the bakery - which is fitted out in a 1920s/1930s aesthetic with Art Deco-style lighting, antique tiles and original cornicing.

Behind the bakehouse is Laurie MacMillan, who also owns southside cafe Strange Brew, alongside co-owner Andrea Bartolini and John Meechan, who has racked up an impressive CV in pastry-making at the prestigious Ottolenghi and NOPI restaurants in London.

And Laurie told us how they "fell in love with the space" and, being located just across the road from sister spot Mesa, "they really wanted to do something with it".

While Lisa Lawson, founder of Dear Green Coffee, was also on hand to explain to us the special coffee blend and filter coffee that will be available this time next week.

We can't wait to head in when it opens!
