Temporary NHS hospital Louisa Jordan takes shape at SEC as coronavirus rates continue to rise

Yesterday saw Health Secretary Jeane Freeman confirm that the temporary hospital being set up at the SEC was to be named the NHS Louisa Jordan.

The name was chosen to pay homage to the nursing sister from Maryhill, who served and died in Serbia during WWI.

And with work underway to bring the hospital into operation, Scotland's Chief Nursing Officer Professor Fiona McQueen has shared the first images from inside the new hospital.

She did so via a tweet that read: "Our NHS Louisa Jordan taking shape- huge thanks to all determined to have her ready as the people of Scotland need her".

The emergency facility at the SEC will be run by the NHS, and will have an initial capacity for 300 patients, which could be expanded to more than 1,000 in the future.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that she expects the hospital to be be ready "within a fortnight" although there is also “hope and expectation” that the repurposed SEC will not need to be used as a hospital.

It joins several other temporary hospitals that have been set up across the UK amid the coronavirus crisis, such as the NHS Nightingale Hospital in London, which will have a capacity for 4,000 patients.
