First look at Star Wars theme park in Disneyland where fans can make their own lightsabers

Star Wars fans were given a sneak peak at a new US theme park dedicated to the iconic movies today.

Disneyland unveiled its newest attraction, the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge theme park, where visitors can build their own droids and lightsabers, interact with aliens and step into the cockpit of an exact copy of the Millennium Falcon.

The attraction - which opens today in the California resort with another to follow at Florida’s Hollywood Studios in August - encompasses a massive 14 acres on each park.

And the film saga’s biggest stars – including Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Billy Dee Williams – delighted fans by showing up to the launch party.

Walt Disney Imagineering and Lucasfilm teamed up to create a whole new planet and backstory for the themed land, where guests are on the planet Batuu in an area called the Black Spire Outpost.

It’s billed as a crossroads for travellers, adventurers and smugglers in the Outer Rim region of space.

Entertainment Weekly said the theme is set between the movies of The Last Jedi and Episode 9.

Two of the park’s rides include the Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, which gives fans the chance to fly their own falcon, and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, where you’ll find yourself in the middle of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance.

A luxury Star Wars themed hotel is expected to follow.

The stars of the movie joined Star Wars creator George Lucas to welcome fans to the park and gave a touching tribute to actor Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew, who died aged 74 last month.

Ford shouted “Peter, this one’s for you,” as he triggered a spectacular fireworks display.
