First look at proposed new Hampden plans including new Kop-style stands

Hampden has been the home of Scottish football for more than 100 years and has seen its fair share of redevlopments throughout the ground's history.

In the 1990s it was transformed from a mostly terraced ground stadium to an all-seater arena holding more than 50,000 football fanatics.

However, as the decades have passed more people have pointed out Hampden's flaws, in particular the distance to the pitch for those sitting in the East and West stands.

New images released by architechts, Holmes Miller, have shown potential future plans for Scotland's national stadium.

The company were commissioned by the SFA in 2020 to completely redesign the arena. Holmes Miller also recently revamped Lesser Hampden and worked on upgrades for the stadium.

However, plans for a complete overhaul of Hampden were put on hold after a UK World Cup 2030 bid were scrapped due to Covid.

Talks of the redesign have simmered since and it is unclear whether a new and improved home for the Tartan Army is on the horizon.

Computer generated images show a two-tiered bowl-like structure inspired by Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena. The stands are situated right next to the pitch, which will delight many fans.

The stadium would also be the biggest in the country, with a capacity of 65,000 if plans were green lit.

It also includes a retractable roof, steeped terraces, Kop-style home ends and an exterior with the ability to change colour.

The company's website read: "Holmes Miller were approached by the SFA in 2020 to provide a vision for Hampden – the art of the possible.

"Our vision was to capture the essence of Hampden – the atmosphere – and wrap a world class Stadium around it. Better views, better facilities : a better experience…whilst retaining the magic.

"The visual brief outlines the ambitions of a new Hampden Park stadium, and specific design cues as part of that."

After the SFA purchased the historic stadium from Queen's Park in 2018 with plans to upgrade the national stadium.

However, with the joint Euro bid just around the corner there could still be hope for the project.

The plans are available to view on the Holmes MIller website here.
