First look at plans to transform Dublin city as council outlines upgrade for Meath Street

Dublin City Council is currently planning to upgrade Meath Street as part of a series of projects in the capital.

The Meath Street Public Realm Project began in 2018 and will transform streets and spaces in The Liberties.

Public meetings were conducted with local businesses and residents of the area in order to find out their concerns.

They gave their feedback which included traffic management, parking, the street image and the potential new uses of the street.

This led to a concept plan for the street, which was completed in summer 2019.

Last summer, a design was created to develop the concept that could be submitted for Part 8 planning approval - where councillors make decisions on projects initiated by the City Council.

Haslem & Co Architects were engaged to develop the preliminary design with Dublin City Council Roads Design Section.

This process included surveying the street and working on issues such as traffic management, drainage and services, utilities, landscaping potential and conservation and archaeological constraints.

The design team will create a formal proposal for the street later this year.

An informal consultation has also been planned with local businesses and residents to gain their views on the development of the project.

This is to ensure that the final design reflects the views of the public.

The community ideas regarding the street upgrade include:

  • providing wider pavements along Meath Street allowing for greater pedestrian priority and a wider range of street uses

  • formalising market activity on Meath Street and providing infrastructure for a regular street market

  • adding planting and landscaping and making provision for street furniture

  • rebalancing traffic, parking and loading to create a more people-centric street

  • measures to spur wider improvement of the streetscape, shopfronts and businesses.
